Denizens, 2022
CSM Spatial Design Foundation
Situated in Camley Nature Reserve, the Denizens are a series of play-spaces that toy with the idea of ‘Structure as Entity’, or the personification of a space. The goal became to generate a feeling of compassion and bonding between user and structure.
For my final project at CSM’s Foundation in Art and Design, I settled on the prompt ‘Structure as Entity’; it was specific enough to generate ideas, and broad enough to support different takes. The project pivoted drastically after a site visit to Camley Nature Reserve, which was alive with children and families enjoying the sliver of green in King’s Cross. I knew then this project had to surround children, it had to fit delicately into the small park, and it had to conjure a feeling of whimsy, a want to explore. Designing with children in mind was a refreshing lense, and it lent the work humour and lightheartedness that was well received at the end of the course.
