Repurposing abandoned bunker Battery Nash on Bainbridge Island to memorialize the island’s integral Japanese community and bring light to their internment faced in WWII.
For the ‘Thresholds’ brief, we were tasked to identify an existing obstruction within a site and open it up. I chose the obstruction of history, specifically that of government ordered Japanese interment in WWII.
Battery Nash is a personal site— I call Bainbridge Island home. The Island’s Japanese population is crucial to its culture and infrastructure, and their history is tragic, yet simultaneously a testament to the strength of the intercultural bond found on the island. Bainbridge Island is a rare place in that regard. Due to the delicate nature of both site and subject matter, my interruption to the Battery was minor yet meaningful.
